into the woods
Hello Everyone! My friends at Terrae Home have been kind enough to ask me to write a guest blog for their new website! Since their specialty is wooden home decor, I figured I would chat a bit about how I have been incorporating wood in a big way, in the recent projects have been working on, with my talented designer-friend, Sandi Hofbauer.
Let me start by saying that the use of wood and other natural elements in the home is a major design trend in 2020. People are becoming more ecologically conscious and knowledgeable than ever before. We are embracing the use of handcrafted and recycled items, while also gravitating towards natural, organic and sustainable materials ranging from wood to stone, woven materials, rice paper, and clay.
The earthy tones of these natural elements are soothing and easy to live with - thank goodness, since we have been spending a lot of time at home in 2020 !
WOOD IS DURABLE
Yes…you can have gorgeous wood counter tops….in your kitchen and laundry room! When they are constructed and sealed properly, they are super durable.
RECYCLED TREASURES
There are so many amazing “one of a kind” architectural pieces made from wood, that you can use to add instant character and history to your home. Here are some beauties that just get better with age!
texture by default
By incorporating wood and natural elements into our home design we can also add instant texture, which is fantastic for infusing layers of interest into a space, especially if you are going for a monochromatic look.
For our client’s master bedroom we designed a linen headboard and installed a beautiful grasscloth wall covering.
I also love this paper which is actually made from individual strips of banana tree bark which are hand laid by artisans. It comes in several different colours.
handcrafted with care
When wood gets in to the right hands (who can also “hand scrape” and “random plane”) it really shines! This is a custom cabinet made for our client’s front hall.
Here is some more handcrafted beauty…..need I say more?
WOOD IS VERSATILE
Stain or paint it? Think of all the colours and finishes. Endless possibilities.
Can't find that perfect vintage piece? Make something new look old!
And I just love a whitewashed finish….a coastal vibe that never goes out of style.
WOOD IS BEAUTIFUL
Simply put: wood is beautiful.
Look at this barn door that was recently installed in our client’s home.
Thanks for reading…
I hope my post inspired you to incorporate more wood and natural elements into your home!
Bye for now,
Vanessa
